Kylie's proud figure stood at the base of the mountains, alone. Her slender muzzle lifted toward the peak, her startling green eyes wandering to and fro, watching the mountain rise steadily into the sky. She stood motionless, her ears pitched forward, and a heavy weight on her limbs. A sadness clawed at her belly.
She had had a fight with Kett. Her adoptive father had insisted on staying with the StarWinder wolves. But what could were they to these wolves? The number of the pack had swollen since she and Kett had last traveled down from the mountains, and Kylie was missing the altitudes sorely. She missed the wind, she missed the sun. She wanted to go home.

"You desire to reach the hights of the mountains, too, young one?" A smile spread accross his black lips, wide, ivory fangs glittering in the sunshine. His golden pelt glittered brightly, like a large, shining topaz, but he looked changed.
His eyes had lost the cheerful glow. What Bayne, a Kerl, had told him earlier that spring had changed his heart. Aslan was alone, but still his desire to find his morning dove Katrina tugged at his heart.
"I still want to travel up there, to see her, to see her one last time, dead or alive, she wouldn't return with me...Why do you wish to go up there?"

'I...' Kylie started at the sudden sound of Aslan's deep voice. She had not heard him padding up behind her at all. She thought for a moment, at a loss for words as she listened to his words. 'Who's she?' The young Drappa suddenly blurted out as he finished, and then, embarrassed and finally remembering her manners, she dipped her head slightly to hide what felt like a deep blush on her cheeks. 'The mountains are my soul. I can never go for long without them, and now me and Kett have been here for almost a whole year, and I just don't see why we can't go back there and live all on our own again like we used to, and...' Kylie choked back a sob. 'Why's he changed so much? Kett and me, we used to be like the wind - free across the mountains. And now, he's so... so... packbound that I...' She had wanted for so long to get her feelings off of her chest, and now, barely organized thoughts came tumbling out. 'And I can't believe he'd ever hunt and be so devoted to a pack. I thought it was just me and him, living alone and having all the fun we'd ever want.' She said bitterly. 'Well, I'm never going to settle into a life like this. I belong in the mountains. And so does he. Why can't he just see that?' She added, her voice dropping to barely above a whisper as she gazed up longingly at the mountains.

"Ah...I see...A fight...Similar to me and her.." He smiled apathetically, a hollow laugh sounding in his vibrating throat. This Drappa was certainly not yet mature, though she seemed the age, her wisdom in manners was still like that of a cub. Aslan smiled again as he thought of her face when he had spoken, atleast he had not frightened her, though he had not expected to dazzle her like so.
"Katrina, a dear friend of mine. That's who 'she' is..." Aslan smiled again, still apathetic and hopeless, strips of fur ripped from his shoulders and back in his numerous efforts for food that had only become a reality this past winter.
"You know, young one, two creatures aren't always meant to be together..Sometimes, they have to split and go their own ways, even for just a little while. If you want to go into the mountains so much, why don't you just go? I could go with you if you wanted company, my name's Aslan." His last three words seemed like the kindest and most cheerful yet. For only a moment, his chocalatey optics glittered brightly with an inward light that only he could hold on to and really mean it.

Kylie stared blankly at him. 'Go seperate ways...?' She repeated, shaking her head slowly. She had never thought to leave Kett, even for a while. She shrugged. 'We're a team. We do everything together. He isn't just like my dad, he's my best friend.' She fell silent. Going into the mountains, alone. Or perhaps even with Aslan for company.
She stood for a moment, saying nothing, and then started. 'I'm Kylie.' She said hastily, as the sudden realization that she had not even given the Dragga her name yet. She peered over at him, her heart heavy. 'Perhaps I should go...' She said slowly, weighing each word as if they were bricks. The glint in his eyes was so reassuring, and his words meant so much to her.
'Maybe I should tell him before I go?' She murmured, more to herself than anything. He would be worried out of his mind if she disappeared without warning, and she could never bear to put Kett into a situation as thus. She sighed. But he would never consent to her going up into the mountains alone, even if it were with Aslan. He knew her too well. He would know that if she went, she would never want to return to the StarWinders. And he would lose track of her forever.

"Perhaps you should..." Aslan had lost the focus of the world, everything was blurred and random. He seemed to be looking at the mountains, but he really didn't know what he was looking at. He saw his thoughts, his past, everything that had been cloaked and hidden away within his mind's depths.
"Kylie...What a nice name...It really is.." He paused to shake his head, ears flicking irritably. "Tell who you want to tell, I'll meet up with you in the morning, night will be here soon and the mountains are dangerous."

'Thank you.' The Drappa smiled gratefully, nodding. She looked up at the mountains wistfully, and then turned. No, she had to tell Kett where she was going. The thought troubled her greatly. How would she manage to convince Kett that she would be alright? She knew just how much she meant to him, and a bond so strong as theirs was what would keep her from having her freedom.
A bark of frustration erupted from the Drappa as she thought. Why was everything so complicated?

Aslan was already heading towards the bushes when she barked. He smirked slightly, youths and their frustration. It was almost cute, he remembered when he had dealt with younger siblings and their anger. He remembered them asking him why he never got angry, he remembered laughing at them, everytime, and saying,
"One must be slow to anger and slow to speak."
They would always look at him odd, so he stopped answering, he just laughing and shrugged. Katrina was the only one that had understood it, but had not yet put it to practice.

The scene of what she knew was going to happen played in her head, over and over again.
Herself: Kett... I don't think I can stay here for so long. I cant' leave the mountains and not go back like this. Kett: Ky, we've been through this, the pack needs us right now. We'll go back soon. Self: But that's what you said a year ago... Kett: What? Self: Nothing. Kett: Look, Ky, I want to go back too, you know that. But... Self: The pack comes first? Kett: Yea. Self: But why? The pack's so much bigger now. There are more wolves to hunt, and Kesh can manage everything too! Kett: Ky, I'm sorry. Self: Whatever. Kett: Ky... Self: Look, I'm thinking of going into the mountains for a while. Kett: But I told you, I can't go. Self: I didn't say anything about you going. Kett: What? Alone? But Ky, no. It's too dangerous! Self: I won't be alone. I'll be going with Aslan. And we can always stay in that cave that we used to stay in. Kett: Ky, no... Self: Please! You never let me do anything on my own! I'm not a baby anymore, Kett! Kett: But no. You're still under my care, aren't you? Self: Well maybe it's time to let go... Kett: Ky, please don't do this... Self: But I have to go. I'll come back I promise. I'd never leave you. Please...?
It was almost too painful to think about. She growled softly. Her temper was rising every time she thought of Kett not letting her go into the mountains with Aslan. She stamped a paw. No, it was her life. She would go regardless. Telling him was only a formality.

Darkness was slowly falling, the bottoms of the sky tinged with pale gold, fading into the coming night of a rich, royal blue. Tor's face was in the full stage, the stars twinkling around her. Aslan sat at the edge of the forest near the mountains, under a large birch, eyes glazed as he thought of having to go into the mountains alone.
By how Kylie had seemed to feel about it, her father Kett was going to let her go. And he would have to go alone, feel the heartache alone, and not even have Katrina. He hardly knew Kylie, only that she was a breach of the nearest pack and that her name was, as she had told him, Kylie. Still, having the possible company lightened the heavy lead weight on his heart and mind, it would be good to have company again.

Kylie padded along slowly, her ears flat. Kett had not taken the news lightly, or very well. But the scene had not gone exactly as she had thought it would. He had simply stared at her, wordlessly, and then shook and his head and turned away, disappearing into the trees. She had called after him, but he had ignored her, flat out. She felt horrible. She and Kett were so close they could read each other's minds, and now he was so mad at her. And his silence most offended her. She knew Kett far better than even Kesh did, and she knew what his silence meant.
'Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile. The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea. They're swept away and nothing is what is seems, the feeling of belonging to your dreams.'
Kylie muttered to herself, her eyes misting over slightly. How could she go now? But then... how could she stay to face Kett?
'And there are voices that want to be heard. So much to mention but you can't find the words. The scent of magic, the beauty that's been when love was wilder than the wind.'
The sky was fading away to darkness, and she could just make out Aslan's form in the distance, half hidden within the cover of the trees. Her steps turned leaden.
'Listen to your heart, mm-mmmmmm
I don't know where you're going and I don't know why, but listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye.'
She looked up resolutely. She was going. No Kett was going to stop her. She needed the mountains. She belonged in the mountains. She didn't belong with these StarWinder wolves. Not even Loka, with whom she had made good friends. No, she was made for the high altitudes, and the freedom.

Aslan smiled as he saw her. He stood, the sunlight scathing at his fur, resulting in a high shine, though it still seemed dead somehow. His chocolate optics glowed with life, though, he was getting his spirits back.
